SINGAPORE, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- The swimming competition of the 2025 World Aquatics Championships concluded with the United States setting a new world record in the women's 4x100m medley relay here on Sunday, while China delivered strong performances to secure two silver and two bronze medals, ending the championships with a total of two golds, six silvers, and six bronzes in swimming.
The United States stormed to victory in the women's 4x100m medley relay, breaking its own world record in 3 minutes and 49.34 seconds. Australia finished second in 3:52.67, while the Chinese quartet of Peng Xuwei, Tang Qianting, Zhang Yufei and Cheng Yujie clocked 3:54.77 to take bronze.
Tang, silver medalist in the women's 100m breaststroke at the Paris Olympics and the reigning world champion in the event, claimed silver in the women's 50m breaststroke with a time of 30.03 seconds. The title went to Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte, who won in 29.55 to clinch her fourth consecutive world title in this event.
"This silver was within my expectations. Ruta is a top-class athlete, and there's a lot I can learn from her," said Tang.
In the women's 50m freestyle final, Cheng took bronze in 24.28 seconds, just behind her compatriot Wu Qingfeng, who finished in 24.26 for silver. The gold went to Meg Harris of Australia, who clocked 24.02.
Canada's teenage prodigy Summer McIntosh capped off her campaign with a fourth gold medal, winning the women's 400m individual medley in 4:25.78, a new championship record. China's rising star Yu Zidi finished fourth in a personal best of 4:33.76.
McIntosh had earlier won the 200m butterfly, 200m individual medley, and 400m freestyle, in addition to a bronze in the 800m freestyle. Yu also placed fourth in both the 200m butterfly and 200m individual medley, setting personal bests in all three events.
France's Olympic champion Leon Marchand added a second gold in Singapore, winning the men's 400m individual medley in 4:04.73, following his world record-breaking performance in the 200m individual medley earlier in the competition.
Elsewhere, Tunisia's Ahmed Jaouadi claimed gold in the men's 1500m freestyle in 14:34.41, adding to his 800m freestyle title. In the men's 50m backstroke, neutral athlete Kliment Kolesnikov triumphed in 23.68 seconds. The neutral athletes B (NAB) team also won the men's 4x100m medley relay with a championship record time of 3:26.93.
The diving competition also concluded on the same day as Australia's Cassiel Rousseau claimed gold in the men's 10-meter platform final.
Olexii Sereda, who won bronze in Doha last year, claimed silver with 515.20 points. Randal Willars Valdez of Mexico earned bronze with 511.95. China's Zhu Zifeng placed fourth, while teammate 14-year-old Zhao Renjie, competing in his first world championships, placed fifth. ■
