GENEVA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) on Sunday condemned the attack on the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) headquarters in Khan Younis, which killed PRCS staff member Omar Isleem and injured two other staff members and one civilian who was trying to help extinguish the fire that broke out at the site.
In a statement, the IFRC called for protecting civilians and humanitarian workers, as well as respecting and preserving the Red Crescent emblem.
It said that the facility, clearly marked with the emblem, suffered multiple attacks. A total of 51 PRCS staff and volunteers were killed in this conflict, with 31 of them on duty and wearing the Red Crescent emblem that should have guaranteed their protection under international humanitarian law.
The IFRC, founded in 1919 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, along with the International Committee of the Red Cross and National Societies. ■
