THE HAGUE, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- One week before the Eredivisie season kicks off, reigning champion PSV claimed the Dutch Super Cup - the Johan Cruyff Shield - with a 2-1 win over Go Ahead Eagles on Sunday in Eindhoven.
Playing at home, PSV dominated much of the match but fell behind in the 35th minute. After hitting the crossbar, Mathis Suray put the visitors ahead by finishing a cross from left back Dean James.
Despite creating several chances, PSV was kept at bay by an outstanding performance from Go Ahead Eagles goalkeeper Jari de Busser. The hosts finally broke through in the final 15 minutes of the season's traditional curtain-raiser. Defender Gerrit Nauber turned an Ivan Perisic cross into his own net to make it 1-1, and five minutes from time Sergino Dest scored the winner.
The victory gives PSV a record-extending 15th Johan Cruyff Shield title, solidifying their status as the competition's most successful club. ■
